Being situated in the Pacific, the Philippines is battered by an average of 20 cyclones a year, not to mention the frequent flooding that is worsened each year by global warming and rising sea levels. We also have many active volcanoes nationwide that routinely act up. We mobilize our Team to quickly provide support for families in these emergency situations.

For an average Filipino household who spends almost 50% of their income to food, this could mean spending more of their time scrounging for food or practically skipping a meal or two in order to make both ends meet. If the situation continues, more children will go undernourished and out of school and more adults will not meet their daily energy requirements to function well not to mention the elderly who can no longer work or subsists day to day with meager income.

To support government’s efforts to help lift households out of poverty, PMI aims to provide additional income opportunities to disadvantaged beneficiaries through technical-vocational skills and microenterprise development.

Violence against women has been existing many years ago in many different forms. In the Philippines, there are implemented laws to protect women’s rights and prevention of violence against women. The government has built campaigns and programs to strengthen their call of action for this phenomenon. But despite of this, Philippines is one of the countries that has the most number of cases of violence against women.

To help the government reduce the vulnerability of children and women to violence, PMI will strengthen the preventive and rehabilitative services of local partners to:
Enable children and women at risk to protect themselves Provide care services for the recovery of children, women and elderly who are experiencing physical, sexual, emotional abuse or physical neglect.

Undernutrition is the underlying cause in 45% of child deaths worldwide (Black, et al., 2013). When left untreated, it leads to stunted growth, which is irreversible and causes serious and costly consequences such as impaired cognitive ability, reduced school performance, poor work capacity and productivity, increased frequency of common infections leading to child death among others.

In the Philippines, 1 in 3 children continue to suffer from wasting and stunting due to lack of access to proper food. The table below shows the 16-year trend of malnutrition prevalence among Filipino children below 5 years old.

To contribute in the improvement of the nutrition situation of the country, PMI aims to reduce the stunting and wasting levels of children below five years old.
